In a statement forwarded to the APA Austrian news agency, Strabag explicitly refuted the claim that it was involved in corruption and that it had supported money laundering via invoices ostensibly issued to HAC.
It is true that the Croatian authorities asked us to support the investigation into HAC with documents about a job from 2009 which was not related to HAC, the statement said, adding that Strabag complied with the request and that
it was never accused of anything.
Croatia's anti-corruption office USKOK on Monday requested that former HAC chief financial officer Josip Sapunar be placed in custody on suspicion of siphoning more than EUR 5 million from HAC via phony contracts in 2006-12. According to some sources, investigators are also interested in HAC's dealings with Strabag.
APA wrote that police last week searched the premises of Strabag's branch.
