Croatian president 'extremely satisfied' with visit to Serbia

Autor: half
TAVANKUT, Oct 17 (Hina) - Croatian President Ivo Josipovic said in Tavankut, Serbia on Thursday that he was extremely satisfied with his talks with his host, Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic, and that they concluded that minority communities were a wealth for Croatia and Serbia.

Josipovic wrapped up his two-day official visit to Serbia in Tavankut, where he and Nikolic met with representatives of the Croat community in Serbia and children attending classes in Croatian.

"I am extremely satisfied with the visit. I am extremely satisfied with what I saw and heard here, with the talks I held with President Nikolic and those led by our delegations," he told reporters.

I "openly" spoke with Nikolic about all the problems burdening Croatia and Serbia, notably about "the relationship of our states towards minority communities, the Croat community in Serbia and the Serb community in Croatia," Josipovic said.

"We know about the problems that exist but we concluded together that minority communities are our wealth, that minority communities connect us and that by respecting our minorities' rights, we can't lose anything but can only gain."

Nikolic said that "everything beautiful comes to an end and President Josipovic's visit is nearing its end."

"My assessment is that we enjoyed ourselves in Tavankut today... We heard what is good and what isn't. I think that not only for the citizens of Serbia and Croatia, the citizens of the region, but for all of Europe, this is an extraordinary sign that Serbia and Croatia can leave behind all that separated and divided them in the past and create a new history for their peoples," said Nikolic.

"We are connected, intertwined. There were tragic events in our past, let there be no more ever again," he said, adding that he thanked "President Josipovic for honouring Serbia with his visit."

This was Josipovic's first official visit to Serbia since Nikolic's election in May 2012. Josipovic had been refusing to visit because of Nikolic's earlier contentious statements about Srebrenica, Greater Serbia, and eastern Croatia's Vukovar as a Serbian town.

In Belgrade, Josipovic held talks with Prime Minister Ivica Dacic and Parliament Speaker Nebojsa Stefanovic and was the first Croatian president to address the Serbian parliament, which he described as "a special honour."

"I am extremely satisfied with how the deputies in the People's Assembly accepted me and I think that meeting is a sign of a new page, of a new possibility and of the big ambitions we have to mend our relations and create a better future for our states and the entire region," said Josipovic.

He said that in talks with representatives of the Croat community, they agreed to measures to improve its position.

"President Nikolic heard from (them) about all the problems that distress them... Certain agreements have been reached and I believe Serbia will do everything possible to make the position of the Croat community even better than it is now. Of course, we have the same obligation in Croatia regarding the Serb community."

Representatives of Croats in Vojvodina said earlier they would inform the two presidents about the issue of representation in the Serbian parliament, the absence of proportional representation in state bodies, discrimination in the financing and provision of space for their cultural institutions, and the danger of shutting down media which broadcast in Croatian.
