The two presidents visited Tavankut as part of Josipovic's two-day official visit to Serbia and there they met with pupils who attend classes in Croatian.
Addressing the children, Josipovic said he and Nikolic had come to Tavankut "to respond to an important question, which is whether the Croatian and the Serb people can close some ugly pages from history."
"Can we give all children, little Croats and little Serbs and little Hungarians, and all kids a happy childhood and a successful future?" Josipovic asked. "We believe we can. I am sure that today is a sign of optimism, a sign that everything bad that happened will never happen again."
Nikolic said he and Josipovic decided to "open a new page in the book of relations between Serbia and Croatia, between the Croatian and the Serb people, which virtually no one has dared to open until now."
"We did this because we want to create a new future for our children and that future must not be burdened by what we and our fathers experienced," he said. "I am proud to be in Tavankut with the president of Croatia. I wish you to live more easily and more beautifully than President Josipovic and I lived."
Later today, the two presidents will met with representatives of the Croatian community in Serbia.
