The situation should be taken seriously and it is the state's task to make sure that Croatia is a country in which rights are protected and to be ready at the same time to talk with those with whom we disagree, she told reporters.
Pusic said this required willingness on both sides and invited the Initiative for the Defence of Croatian Vukovar to talk with the government, "instead of smashing, attacking and celebrating the breaking of the law."
Asked if the HDZ was running the Initiative, Pusic said she had no such information. "But we will see very quickly how this works."
She said the government was talking about this, recalling that the prime minister had invited the leaders of the rebellion in Vukovar for talks. "They will show with their behaviour whether they care about talks or further destabilisation."
Pusic described as unacceptable the disowning of Vukovar and its residents through the public statements of the Initiative's leaders, saying this shows that Vukovar was no longer a key issue and that this was a different kind of political confrontation.
