Serbian Progressive Party most popular, most want early elections

Autor: half
BELGRADE, Oct 1 (Hina) - Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic's Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) is the most popular party in Serbia, where a majority of citizens want an early parliamentary election and view the behaviour of political parties as the beginning of an election campaign, according to the findings of a public opinion poll released in Belgrade on Tuesday.

The poll was conducted on September 27-30 on a sample of 1,080 citizens by the Faktor Plus Agency.

The SNS enjoys the support of 41.5 per cent of the electorate, followed by a coalition led by PM Ivica Dacic's Socialist Party of Serbia with 12.7%, and the strongest opposition Democratic Party with 11.8% of the vote.

As many as 62% of those polled want an early parliamentary election, citing the unrealistic balance of power in the parliament and the government as the main reason, while 38% are against an early vote. If the election were to be held, most respondents would like parliamentary and local elections to be held together.

Forty-one per cent of the electorate would go to the polls, 37% are not sure, while 22% would not vote.

The poll also showed that 84% of respondents are against the holding of an LGBT Pride parade, 11% are for holding it at any cost, while 5% did not respond to this question. Asked why Pride should not be held, 31%, including members of the LGBT community, cited security reasons, 27% said the LGBT minority "is provoking the majority", while 26% said "this is not normal." The polling agency said this was an improvement, as in recent years as many as 50% of the population viewed gays as "abnormal".

Vucic is the most influential politician in Serbia and 74% of the respondents see him as prime minister, as against 15% who support incumbent PM Dacic.
