Croatia's Agrokor threatens to close edible oil works in Serbia

Autor: half
SUBOTICA, Aug 30 (Hina) - The Dijamant oil works in the northern Serbian province of Vojvodina, which is owned by Croatia's Agrokor concern, has announced that it will stop buying sunflower in Vojvodina and Serbia because of the blockade its factory in Zrenjanin as well as close the factory, which could impact Serbia's vegetable oil exports, the media in the province said on Friday.

The factory was blocked on Wednesday with tractors by farmers from the south Banat region disgruntled with the purchase price of oil crops.

If Dijamant stops buying sunflower, the purchase price will decline further because the factory buys up to 120,000 tonnes of sunflower a year, said Olga Curovic, president of the local business community for industrial crops.

She said farmers must bear that in mind and that they would not be able to sell sunflower at last year's prices, when the crop was poor.

Farmers demand HRK 2.60 per kilo of sunflower, while Dijamant is offering HRK 1.70.

Disgruntled farmers have accused buyers of monopoly. They have blocked the biggest buyers in Zrenjanin, Nova Crnja and Pancevo, and tried to bring their tractors outside the government in Belgrade, but were stopped by the police.
