Vukovar county farmers won't stop protest

Autor: half
VINKOVCI, Aug 17 (Hina) - Disgruntled farmers from Vukovar-Srijem County active in the Croatian Farmers' Trade Union, who have been protesting for 11 days, do not intend to stop even though a plan to head for Zagreb with their tractors was scrapped, union president Tomislav Pokrovac confirmed.

"We are disappointed by the conduct of Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic and his ministers. However, we won't stop the protest," he said, adding that farmers' associations participating in the protest would meet tomorrow to decide on further steps.

The protesting farmers yesterday gave Milanovic until 6 pm today to arrange a meeting with them or they would head for Zagreb with their tractors. Pokrovac said the PM had not contacted them.

Disgruntled farmers have been protesting in a number of counties, demanding the payment of more than HRK 450 million in subsidies. They are also unhappy with the purchase price of wheat, HRK 1.05 per kilogram, claiming it should not be below HRK 1.35.

They also demand that Agriculture Minister Tihomir Jakovina resign. He said that those blocking roads were responsible for their actions.

"There is a very small number of disgruntled farmers. Because of ignorance, demagogy, petty politics and the empty story behind all of this, they are primarily causing damage to Croatia's agriculture," he said.
