"Slovenia fully supports giving Serbia a date for the start of EU accession negotiations and will discuss this on Monday at a meeting of EU countries' foreign ministers," Erjavec said after meeting with Serbian Foreign Minister Ivan Mrkic.
Erjavec said Serbia should be given a date "this year", which would be a positive signal for the entire region.
Mrkic said Slovenia supported Serbia at all meetings on EU enlargement.
The two ministers said Serbian-Slovenian political and economic relations were excellent, with Erjavec adding that Slovenia viewed Serbia as a strategic partner.
Ahead of his first official visit to the country, he told Tanjug news agency that Serbia had made big progress on the road to EU membership and shown commitment to meeting accession candidate criteria, that it deserved to start the negotiations and that it could count on Slovenia's support.
Erjavec said that with the agreement on normalisation of relations with Kosovo, Serbia had shown commitment to regional stability and the development of good neighbourly relations and has done a lot to draw closer to the EU, implement reforms and create prerequisites for the continuation of that process.
