State Court appeals chamber increases sentence for Srebrenica atrocities

Autor: half
SARAJEVO/MOSTAR, June 17 (Hina) - The Bosnian State Court appeals chamber has increased a sentence to 24 years' imprisonment for former Bosnian Serb special policeman Zeljko Ivankovic for his involvement in the genocide, imprisonment and abduction of more than 1,000 Bosniak civilians in the Srebrenica area who were killed in the summer of 1995 by units led by Bosnian Serb wartime military leader Ratko Mladic, the BIRN information network which follows war crimes trials said on Monday.

The appeals chamber found that Ivanovic took part in the capture of Bosniak men who had surrendered and in their escorting to a warehouse in Kravica, a village near Srebrenica in eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina where about 1,000 were killed.

A trial chamber sentenced Ivanovic to 13 years for crimes against humanity. The appeals chamber quashed the sentenced and he was retried.

Serb troops killed more than 8,000 Bosniak men in Srebrenica and a UN-protected area in east Bosnia in the summer of 1995, which was the biggest war crime committed in Europe after World War II.
