Post-election monitoring is one German MP's opinion, says Pusic

ZAGREB, March 16 (Hina) - The proposal to impose monitoring for Croatia after it joins the European Union is the opinion of one German MP and contrary to the German government's official position, Croatian Foreign and European Affairs Minister Vesna Pusic said on Saturday.

The ratification of Croatia's EU accession treaty in the German parliament "is not in question," she said commenting on the proposal by the chair of the Bundestag's European committee, Gunther Krichbaum, to impose post-accession monitoring for Croatia.

This is the opinion of one German deputy and not the first time he is making it and it is "contrary to the official position of the German government and foreign ministry," said Pusic.

"In free Europe everyone can have any opinion they want. The man has a different opinion but the procedure and the ratification are not in question," she said responding to questions from the press.

Krichman said on Friday that Germany planned to seek the imposition of additional clauses as a condition to ratify Croatia's EU accession treaty which would envisage half-year reports on the situation in the judiciary and the fight against corruption.

In a statement to Hina, the German Foreign Ministry said it abided by what was said in the treaty, contrary to speculation about the possibility of subsequent changes.

Pusic also commented on the slurs which Dinamo football club executive director Zdravko Mamic made yesterday against Science, Education and Sports Minister Zeljko Jovanovic, for which he is facing criminal charges.

Pusic labelled Mamic's statements as a shameful, unacceptable and chauvinistic outburst, saying she hoped he would be punished adequately.

Asked about the prime minister's recommendation that state-owned companies should not advertise publicly, Pusic said the promotion of one's programmes and communication with citizens was important for all, but that advertising which became an end in itself was pointless.
