In a talk on the EU ahead of Croatia's accession at the Zagreb School of Economics and Management, Lamassoure said the EU was neither a federation nor a confederation but a democratic political entity without precedent which managed to unite different nations, enabling them to lead a peaceful coexistence while maintaining their national sovereignty, identity, freedom, language and culture.
Commenting on the economic and financial crisis, Lamassoure said it pointed out the importance of solidarity because EU member countries, whether they liked it or not, shared a common destiny.
The EU should grow into a community of solidarity in which everyone should meet their commitments but also be willing to help others, he said.
We need more Europe, a stronger Europe, more solidarity with the member states in difficulties, and not its weakening, Lamassoure added.
