Vehicles being driven in the Croat-Bosniak Federation entity are 16.99 years old on average, according to an analysis commissioned by the country's Foreign Trade Chamber. Nearly 40 per cent of private cars are older than 20 years and only 6.72 per cent were manufactured after 2008.
In the Serb entity, 48.5% of vehicles are more than 15 years old, while only 9.7% were made in the last five years.
The oldest registered cars in the country were made in 1971 - the Ford 17M, Volkswagen's beetle and the Peugeot 204.
According to Mesud Lakota, secretary of the state's consumer protection association, the data collected only shows the population's poverty.
"In Sarajevo Canton there are 100,000 vehicles and their average value is about 2,000 convertible marks (about 1,000 euros). Is that wealth?" he told Nezavisne Novine daily.
