Croatian agriculture minister signs Danube Soya Declaration

BERLIN/ZAGREB, Jan 19 (Hina) -Please note that the headline of the article "Croatian economy minister signs Danube Soya Declaration" should correctly read as "Croatian agriculture minister signs Danube Soya Declaration".

Following is the news item:

"Croatian Agriculture Minister Tihomir Jakovina signed in Berlin on Saturday the Danube Soya Declaration which is aimed at increasing the production of GMO-free soya in Europe due to higher demand, the Agriculture Ministry said in a press release.

The declaration was moved by Austria and signed by the Danube region countries, including Croatia, Germany, Austria, Bavaria, Hungary, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Serbia.

The intention of the signatories is to increase GMO-free soya production from the current three percent of arable land in the European Union. The plan is to sow 1.8 million hectares in all Danube region countries to reduce the dependence of European cattle feed manufacturers on imports.

In Croatia, a pilot project is expected to be carried out for interested farmers who should sign contracts with the Danube Soya Association, thus ensuring a fixed price for the sale of the soya produced.

By signing the declaration, Croatia contributes to the improvement of soya production in the European Union as well as the use of national resources in the European context, said Jakovina.

The project and the signing of the declaration have been supported by the Croatian Chamber of Commerce, he said, adding that the Cepin edible oil manufacturer was interested in the processing of 150,000 tonnes of soya and the Agrokor concern in producing and branding GMO-free soya."
