Autor: half
VIENNA, Jan 20 (Hina) - The 66th traditional Burgenland Croats Ball was held in Vienna on Saturday night, organised by the Croatian Burgenland Cultural Society and the Croatian Centre in Vienna.

The event drew more than 1,100 Croats living in Vienna and their guests from Croatia and abroad as well as their Austrian friends, organisers said.

The ball included a Molise-Croatia quadrille aimed at highlighting the recently intensified cooperation between the Burgenland Croats in Austria and the Molise Croats in Italy.

Opening the ball, Croatian Centre president Tibor Jugovic said Croats were proud of the tradition, culture and customs they had been nurturing in Austria for 480 years.

The 66th Burgenland Croats Ball is one of numerous cultural events to be held in Vienna ahead of Croatia's accession to the European Union on July 1.

Ball coordinator Peter Tyran said the Burgenland Croats hoped the accession would have a positive impact on the Burgenland Croats in Austria and the neighbouring countries.

The guests included politicians, business people, diplomats and cultural figures from Croatia, Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Italy. Also among them was the chief of the Croatian state office for Croats outside Croatia, Darija Krsticevic, who said the ball was important for the strengthening of the unity of Croats in Central Europe.

The state secretary for integration in the Austrian government, Sebastian Kurz, said Austrian-Croatian relations were very good, that they would be even better when Croatia joined the EU and that Austria was looking forward to it.

Speaking to Hina, Croatian Ambassador in Vienna Gordan Bakota said the presence of senior Austrian officials at the ball showed the renown the Burgenland Croats enjoyed in Vienna and the special role they played in Croatian-Austrian relations.
