The Vukovar City Museum was founded in 1948 and had about 50,000 items on display until 1991, when the war began. Until 1997, the museum operated as part of Zagreb's Mimara museum. Some of the Vukovar museum's art was stored in Eltz Castle, which sustained extensive damage during the 1991-95 war. Some works were destroyed, some disappeared and some were taken to Serbia, from where they were returned in 2001.
