In the first day back from a two-day Christmas break, speculative short covering and scattered roaster buying drove the market through the widely-watched 115-cent level early in the session. From there, fresh fund buying carried benchmark March futures to a peak of 117.50 cents, its highest since late August. "There was very good fund buying," said one trader, adding that origin selling was unusually light overhead. "Colombia and Brazil weren't there. Everyone is on vacation." After the early spike, the buying momentum wound down by midday, prompting some speculators to take profits ahead of the weekend. March delivery gained 1.45 cent a lb on the day, to 116.20, having traded from 113.20 to 117.50. May futures rose 1.25 cent a lb, to 113.55, while the outer months gained 1.35 to 2.50. Fundamentally, traders said talk that Brazil's 1997/98 harvest would sharply trail the 1996/97 yield lent some impetus to the market. On Thursday, officials from the Minais Gerais state in Brazil estimated the 1997/98 crop at 8.3 million bags, down from a revised 13.8 million in 1996/97. Today's move through both 115 and 117 cents sent a bullish signal, but traders said March would need to hold above the 115 mark to confirm a technical breakout. "The market definitely looks strong," the trader said. "We now need a further break through 117.50 and we need to hold above today's low." Volume was fairly robust, at an estimated 9,454 lots. Traders said that figure included 734 against actuals (AA's). 301118 MET dec 96
