Aluminium ends LME morning hovering at lows
LONDON, Oct 3 (Reuter) - LME base metals looked feeble at
Thursday's midday closing but most of them hovered in recent
ranges during thin trading with only aluminium venturing to
carve out fresh lows.
Three months aluminium notched up a fresh 2-1/4 year low of
$1,340 per tonne on the pre-market on fund and bank selling and
wobbled near the weaker levels during ring trading.
Forecasts of weak European demand and prospects of
overhanging supplies knocked spirits, pushing prices below
critical support.
Trade buying at the lows was not enough to keep the market
from ending the morning kerb at $1,345, down $32 on the day.
Support was seen next at $1,330, then at $1,300.
Copper whipped back and forth around the $1,900 level, but
finally succumbed to selling pressure, ending the morning at
$1,892, down $26, but off its session low of $1,886.
Important support is pegged at the September 12 low of
$1,850.
Traders say the market has seen some decent warrant sales
recently, and fair physical offtake, but Sumitomo positions are
still seen overhanging prices.
In addition, the market's recent volatile swings has pushed
many wary traders to the sidelines.
Nickel finished slightly lower after a try at the upside on
news that a WMC Ltd mine in Western Australia was shut after a
miner was killed.
Last kerb business was at $7,075 per tonne, down $20 from
Wednesday.
Tin followed the lacklustre trend, ending the morning at
$6,020, off $20.
Lead looked at slightly lower levels early on, but managed
to finish at $759, down $1, while last business in zinc was down
$3 at $1,018, well within the well-worn range.
Alloy was marked down with the primary market, closing the
kerb at $1,205/15 versus $1,225.
