Sharon Johnson of Frank Schneider and Co Inc said some rain in the Delta region over the weekend and a crop report from merchants Weil Brothers were supportive to the market. Weil estimated that the current crop will be 17.155 million bales, lower than USDA's estimate of 17.758 million bales. The Yom Kippur holiday also kept some dealers and merchants away from their desks, reducing trading volume on the exchange. "The first notice day for the October contract is tomorrow and that may give us a better view of what's going on. I suspect things looked better today than they really are," Johnson said. The Census Bureau's cotton consumption figure for August is also due Tuesday, though no major surprises were forecast. December cottons settled 0.71 cent firmer at 76.10 cents per pound, traded 76.20 to 75.52 cents. 241049 MET sep 96
