Benchmark December cocoa settled down $16 a tonne, at $1,336, it lowest settlement since March 27, after ranging between $1,346 and $1,330. March fell $14 to $1,373, while the rest ended $12 to $16 lower. "The perception has changed about the coming (Ivorian) crops," said Smith Barney analyst Walter Spilka. "And the record delivery in London show there is a ton of cocoa out there for anyone who wants to buy. For right now there's plenty of cocoa." On Monday, a major commodity trader took the largest ever delivery in one day - 212,500 tonnes for spot LCE September contract. New York cocoa has ended lower eight out of the last nine sessions, with the December contract sinking $99 since reaching a peak of $1,435 on August 21, as the latest round of Ivorian crop estimates pressured values, traders said. PCR Ltd's updated Ivorian 1996/97 crop forecast released last Wednesday said prospects for the upcoming harvest had improved due to heavy rains in early July. They pegged output at about 850,000 tonnes. The previous week, a private U.S. forecaster reportedly estimated the 1996/97 Ivorian crop would range between 790,000 and 930,000 tonnes. Preliminary forecasts said the Ivorian crop would come in at about 800,000 to 850,000 tonnes. Last season the Ivory Coast produced a record cocoa crop of about 1.2 million tonnes. Technically, dealers said fund selling drove the December contract through $1,350 and $1,340 support today. They said December's next downside target would be $1,325-$1,315, a gap formed in late March. Resistance was pegged at $1,350-$1,352. Volume was fairly heavy, at an estimated 9,868 lots, traders said. 041155 MET sep 96
