Opening prices jumped by as much as $12.50 a tonne in what traders said was a knee-jerk reaction to Wednesday's news on Indonesian palm oil export quotas. "There were some really silly numbers being put about this morning, but later people came to their senses and if anything prices could come lower," said one trader. Indonesian trade sources said on Wednesday the government is to limit exports of crude palm oil to 1,555,000 tonnes during 1998 and palm olein exports to 1,085,000 tonnes. Indonesian industry sources estimate exports of crude palm oil during 1997 at 1.30 million tonnes and olein at 1.0 million tonnes. "There may be a bottleneck in supplies in January, but this morning's jump in prices was overdone," said another trader. The remainder of the market was quiet owing to a trade dinner in Hamburg on Thursday evening and the Thanksgiving Day holiday in the U.S. Apart from crude palm oil all other prices were unchanged from midday at the close. Dutch soy oil closed 1.50 guilders up after Dec traded at 130.50 guilders a 100 kilos fob ex-mill. Rape oil was unchanged to 1.50 guilders higher after Feb/Apr fetched 121.50 guilders and May/Jul 119 guilders, however traders said they was some doubts about these trades and could not confirm them. Crude palm oil cif Europe closed $2.50 up to $2.50 down while products were unchanged to $2.50 lower. Coconut oil sellers were unchanged to $5 up after Jan/Feb traded at $615 a tonne cif.
