"Most people are taking a wait-and-see attitude and want to see how the Malaysian market reacts to the Indonesian quotas" said one trader. Trade sources in Jakarta said the government would limit exports of crude palm oil to 1.46 million tonnes and 1.08 million tonnes of crude palm oil-equivalent palm olein. The decision was made at a closed-door meeting between eight of Indonesia's largest producers and exporters and officials of the Industry and Trade Ministry. The sources said the quotas would be implemented from December, when exports would be capped at 84,650 tonnes of crude palm oil. Palm olein exports would be limited to 59,068 tonnes of crude palm oil-equivalent. For January, the ceiling was fixed at 39,696 tonnes of crude palm oil. Palm olein exports would be capped at 27,704 tonnes of crude palm oil-equivalent. The January quota is tentative and will be reviewed in the second half of December, the sources added. Traders in Europe said they did not expect any immediate reaction to the news, which put the limit slightly above the 2.43 million tonne figure talked about last week. They added, it would take a little while before the effect, if any, would filter through to the international market. "A lot will depend on what people's commitments are and what they are allowed to export," said one trader. Traders said generally the market was hampered by the holiday in the U.S. on Thursday and a trade dinner Hamburg on the same day. Soft oil showed little reaction to the higher futures market in Chicago with prices barely changed from midday. Coconut oil hovered above $600 a tonne with traders reporting good consumer interest at that level. News of an earthquake of around 6.8 on the Richter scale on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi had no impact on the market. "There are coconut plantations in the area, but it is along way from the main growing region and hopefully all it's done is knock down few trees," said a trader. At the close coconut oil was $5 to 2.50 a tonne up after Jan/Feb traded at $610 and Feb/Mar at $617.50 a tonne cif. Palmkernel oil finished $15 up after Jan/Feb traded at $610 a tonne cif. Crude palm oil cif Europe closed $7.50 to $2.50 up while products were unchanged to $5 higher. Dutch soy oil finished 0.50 guilders down to 1.50 guilders up while rape oil was unchanged to 1.50 guilders higher after Jan traded at 126, Feb/Apr at 120.50 and Aug/Oct at 111 guilders a 100 kilos fob ex-mill.
