But steady scale-down manufacturer buying, as well as light trade interest, stemmed further losses, they added. "It's pretty much what we've been seeing the last couple of days -- spec selling into manufacturer and trade buying," said one trader. At 1201 EDT, benchmark September was down $18 at $1,465 a tonne, traded $1,488 to $1,462. Second-month December was $17 lower at $1,512, while the back months fell $13 to $18. Cocoa prices headed higher at the outset, as expected, in line with gains overnight in London. Traders said September's inability to get past chart resistance at $1,490 dampened buyers' enthusiasm. They also said a still-strong dollar against sterling and other European currencies weighed on the market. "There was a little currency-related arb selling early on, but they have backed off," said a trader. Downward momentum accelerated after September fell through $1,475, triggering sell-stop orders. On the charts, traders said September now faced support at $1,460, followed by $1,448 and $1,438 to $1,436. Resistance was still seen near $1,490. Volume as of 1100 EDT was heavy, at an estimated 7,076 lots. 071018 MET aug 97
