Benchmark September rose $2 a tonne on the day, to $1,577, after ranging from $1,587 to $1,556. Spot July ended $5 lower, at $1,551, while the remaining months finished up $1 to $5. Cocoa prices headed lower at the outset, gapping down nearly $20, after losses on the London market overnight. Dealers said light trade interest toward the lows stemmed losses, prompting locals to cover short positions. Upward momentum picked up a bit after the September contract got through $1,575, its close on Friday. Although the market managed to recoup early losses, dealers said September was likely to trade sideways in the near-term amid a lack of fresh fundamental input. Some traders still expected the market to come under pressure as speculators, who are believed to be net long some 25,000 lots, liquidate positions. Technically, traders said September will probably face some resistance at $1,590,, with the next level seen at $1,600. On the downside, September support was put near $1,545, followed by $1,525. The day's volume was thin, at an estimated 4,551 lots. 150940 MET jul 97
