Traders said locals began liquidating long positions almost from the outset, discouraged by the September contract's recent failure to fill a key chart gap up to $1,610 a tonne. Benchmark September fell $24 a tonne on the day, to $1,575, after ranging from $1,602 to $1,573. Spot July also ended $24 lower, at $1,556, while the remaining months finished down $14 to $21. Traders said the market is likely to continue to come under pressure as speculators, who are believed to be still net long some 30,000 lots, unwind positions. "There's a general feeling that specs are still long and haven't reduced their positions substantially," said one trader. Technically, traders said today's close near session lows was viewed as bearish. September support was seen near $1,537-$1,540, followed by $1,520. On the upside, September will probably face soem resistance at the $1,600 mark, they said, with the next level of resistance seen at $1,610. Although no fresh fundamentals were in the market, some traders said improved prospects for the 1997/98 Ivorian harvest continued to dampen sentiment. But worries about the Ivorian crop were far from over, with traders closely monitoring a recent slow-down rainfall. "The weather is a little dryer and that has caused some concerns," a trader said. "There are a lot of small pods on the trees and if it gets dry, they could be damaged." The day's volume was fairly light, at an estimated 5,858 lots. 141015 MET jul 97
