Traders said, the general tone was softer throughout the complex, with the exception of copper, which held above $2,400 despite a 1,250-tonne increase. Copper was being cautious, ahead of next week's pricing against the July date. Even so, there was reasonable trade lending interest for the full cash/threes spread, which traded at backwardations between $145 and $140. The crunch dates run from July to the end of July, and July/one week was indicated at $43/45, while July/two-weeks was indicated at $73. The forward market showed little inclination to nudge up towards $2,420 resistance, and drifted back instead to near $2,400 before finding buying support. Last kerb trade was at $2,410 a tonne, up $4.50 from Friday afternoon's kerb. Short-term trading may remain range-bound until the short dates are either rolled forward or covered, traders added. The aluminium market was unable to hold above $1,600, with a 2,725-tonne inventory decline just another drawdown in the current trend and no real surprise. There was some downside support on the kerb, although last business was at $1,597, a $10 decline from the pre-weekend kerb. Lead briefly hit a new three-month of peak of $669 this morning, but subsequently went into reverse amid some light trade sales. Some followthrough will be needed to sustain Friday's advances, although traders noted September tightness - Sept/Oct was at $3 backwardation. Last forward business was at $657, down $7. Zinc continued to consolidate below last week's 6-3/4 year highs of $1,495, with some of the heat having gone out of the market. Prices were $2 easier at $1,468. Nickel sagged back away from $7,000, and was $50 lower at $6,940. However, tin gained in thin trading on e bargain-hunting buying that emerged near recent lows of $5,510. Final kerb trade was at $5,590, up $40.
