Brokers noted the spec/hedge report, issued before the market opened, was in line with expectations that speculators have reduced their short positions. There was also talk about the possibility of more rain in the Delta growing region of Missisippi. "We had a lot of rain last week, so as long as it remains light, we will have no problem," Sharon Johnson of Frank Schneider and Co, Inc said. Smith Barney said earlier there was a possibility of scattered showers in the northern regions of the Delta overnight, but the bulk of the area was dry. July cotton settled 0.06 cent firmer at 73.42 cents a lb, traded 73.65 to 72.90 cents. New-crop December went out 0.03 cent higher at 75.76 cents. Volume was estimated at 8,000 lots, less than half of Monday's heavy 18,709 lots. 041043 MET jun 97
