July rose to 73.90 cents, its highest level since hitting 74.10 cents on April 15, before settling at 73.36 cents, up 0.91. New-crop December finished 0.70 cent firmer at 75.73 cents. Concern that rain and cool weather in the eastern part of the cotton belt could slow crop progress may have given the market a fundamental boost, sources said. They stressed that it is too soon in the season to worry about cuts in yields, however. The U.S. Department of Agriculture will issue its weekly crop progress report after the close. An estimated 23,000 lots changed hands on the day, compared with Friday's official 14,216 lots. 031150 MET jun 97
