Trading had yet to return to normal after the holiday season and fundamental news was in short supply, they said. Middling 1-1/32 inch cottons saw some price testing activity with U.S. and Australian origins quoted up 0.25 cents a lb but the market for the most popular Central Asian styles was extremely quiet. There were few firm trades reported but as selected markets return to normal after the holidays, buying interest took up where it left off at the end of 1996 with quality cottons for nearby shipment the focus of attention. Prices for middling grade 1-3/32 were quoted 0.50 to 1.25 cents a lb lower, with U.S. origins experiencing the biggest drop. 071028 MET jan 97
