Bishops' commission calls for national population strategy

Autor: half
SISAK, Dec 18 (Hina) - The Croatian Bishops' Conference's (HBK) Iustitia Et Pax commission on Monday discussed a statement on the end of the 1991-95 Homeland War and its echoes, and underlined the need to raise awareness in the Croatian public about the Bosnian Croats who have been indicted by the Hague war crimes tribunal.

The commission called on all faithful to pray for a just sentence for the accused.

It said the tribunal's acquittal of Croatian generals Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markac was legally very well-founded and that it had given the Croatian people its pride and dignity back.

The commission condemned the Croatian government's decision to close the office for the research of communist crimes and include it in the war veterans ministry.

The commission said it was necessary to adopt a national population strategy after the 2011 census showed a decline in the number of Croatia's population, adding that it was "immoral and ill-intentioned" to call on young people to leave Croatia and seek a future abroad.

In Croatia's difficult economic and social situation, with 350,000 jobless, the commission calls for society's structures to unite on fundamental state issues, regardless or party or other divisions, Iustitia Et Pax said in a statement, adding that it was preparing a statement on the social and economic situation in the country in an attempt to help stop "the defeatism in our society."
