Media say politicians washing their hands of arrested tycoon

Autor: half
BELGRADE, Dec 15 (Hina) - Serbian politicians and former ministers are washing their hands of Miroslav Miskovic, the arrested owner of Delta Holding and one of the most powerful Serbs, and not even President Tomislav Nikolic was allegedly willing to help him avoid arrest and detention, Belgrade's print media reported on Saturday.

Citing an unnamed source, Blic said Miskovic asked for Nikolic's help after his first interview with the police but the president refused. The paper said "the presidency would neither confirm nor refute this information."

A day after Miskovic's arrest, Nikolic said on his Twitter page that Deputy Prime Minister and government coordinator for the fight against corruption Aleksandar Vucic "has my full support in the fight against corruption and organised crime."

Blic went on to say that "the good relationship between Nikolic and Miskovic is no secret" and that Miskovic "personally congratulated Nikolic on his election victory" as well as "appeared at his inauguration" with two other tycoons, Milan Bek and Miodrag Kostic.

The paper said that after leaving the Serbian Radical Party, Nikolic "admitted that Miskovic helped the Radicals' campaign ahead of the May 2008 parliamentary election."

Blic said it was no secret that Miskovic "was the financier of nearly all political parties" but no party official wanted to confirm this.

Under the headline "Politicians washing their hands of Miskovic", Danas reported that representatives of a dozen political parties and former ministers Slobodan Milosavljevic, Predrag Bubalo and Aleksandar Vlahovic denied to the paper that Miskovic had ever financed them.

Vucic said on Friday that Miskovic used to pay some politicians between 30,000 and 50,000 euros a month but did not name the people who allegedly took bribes, saying "relevant state bodies" should collect the evidence.

Vucic added that many politicians "were openly and without hesitation on Miskovic's side and not the side of the state" and that this was being investigated.

Serbia's criminal police arrested Miskovic and his son Marko on Wednesday along with another eight persons suspected of financial wrongdoing in the privatisation of road companies and syphoning around 30 million euros. They were placed in 30 days' custody.

Until last year, Delta Holding employed 25,000 people and brought in three billion euros in revenue. Today the company employs 7,700 workers and is one of the five largest companies in Serbia.

Early in 2011, Miskovic sold his Delta Maxi retail chain to the Belgian Delhaize consortium for 932.5 million euros.

Miskovic was able to build his empire and wealth due to privileges he enjoyed through his connections to former Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic.
