Finance minister not surprised by HNS' objection to real estate tax

Autor: half
ZAGREB, Nov 24 (Hina) - Finance Minister Slavko Linic said on Saturday he was not surprised by the Croatian People's Party's (HNS) objections to the real estate tax bill, adding that many were intimidated by it and spreading fears, which was why Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic said the bill would require a four-month public debate.

"That's enough time for every citizen to find out all the details of the bill, so that we can put arguments on the table and try to see why somebody disagrees with the bill," Linic said on RTL television, adding that the ruling coalition's HNS was entitled to its opinion.

Asked if the HNS had stated its objections during inner cabinet meetings, Linic said the bill was presented at the inner cabinet four weeks ago and that suggestions were made and that they were eventually incorporated into the bill presented two days ago.

Asked to comment on Milanovic's statement yesterday that he agreed with most of the HNS' objections, Linic said the PM, like everyone, felt that anyone could have objections and disagree.

Asked if the real estate tax law would go into force on April 1, the minister said the public debate would show if there were indeed that many problems with the bill and the PM would then decide whether to put the bill to the government and the government would decide whether to send it to parliament.

Asked if he would see it as a personal defeat if the bill was not enacted and if he might leave the government, Linic said he saw no reason for that, adding that Croatia must carry out reforms.

Asked when parafiscal levies would be rescinded, Linic said the government's policy was that growth was not possible without the industry.

"The government's message is that it will fight for the economy's competitiveness and reduce levies in the industry, while trying to take from those who are richer and have many more properties which they don't even use," he said.
