First pufferfish caught in Adriatic

Autor: mses
ZAGREB, Nov 11 (Hina) - The Natural History Museum in Dubrovnik has recently reported that a new fish species has been discovered in the Adriatic Sea off the island of Jakljan. The fish caught by local fishermen has never been found in the Adriatic Sea before, and the museum confirmed that it was a Lagocephalus Sceleratus from the pufferfish family (Tetraodontidae).

This fish species, whose natural habitats are the Indian and Pacific Oceans, came to the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal, and since 2003 members of this fish species have been spotted along the eastern Mediterranean Coast and in the Aegean Sea.

This fish can be a potential health risk for humans, because some of its internal organs and sometimes the skin, are toxic. Nevertheless, it is regarded as fancy food in Japan, Egypt and Turkey where it is sold illegally.

The fish that was caught off Dubrovnik was 66 centimetres long and weighed 3.5 kilogrammes. It was donated to the museum and put on display in its Ichthyology Department.
