Ministry comments on hydrogen sulfide concentration in S. Brod

Autor: half
ZAGREB, Oct 27 (Hina) - The Environment and Nature Protection Ministry on Saturday reported about the measures it was taking about the concentration of hydrogen sulfide in Slavonski Brod, stressing the most important thing was that the existing concentration did not endanger people's health.

The concentration is significantly below the level prescribed by the World Health Organisation, the ministry said in a statement, stressing it was undertaking many activities and that it wanted to find a lasting solution to the problem because the unpleasant smell bothered local residents.

The statement recalled that Minister Mihael Zmajlovic, as soon as he stepped into office, requested in writing from the relevant minister in the Bosnian Serb entity an urgent meeting of task forces which met on September 27 and agreed several important steps, including the making of a cadastre of pollution on both sides of the Sava river.

The statement recalled that the Environmental Protection Fund had set aside funds for an additional air quality measuring station in Slavonski Brod.

The town's mayor, Mirko Duspara, said yesterday he had sent a letter to President Ivo Josipovic and Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic as well as relevant ministries concerning the increasingly excessive amounts of hydrogen sulphide in the air, demanding the matter of emission of harmful gases from the oil refinery in Bosanski Brod, a town across the Sava in neighbouring Bosnia and Herzegovina, be dealt with as soon as possible.
