The drive closes on December 24 and is expected to raise HRK 200,000.
HCR acting manager Miljenko Vahtaric said about 700 square kilometers of land in 12 Croatian counties were believed to contain mines left over from the 1991-95 war.
He recalled that Croatia's plan and obligation were to clear the country of mines by 2019, saying this drive would also raise awareness of the danger posed by mines.
Vahtaric said Croatia was not dealing with the mine issue alone with its budgetary funds and that since 2001, the HCR had received about EUR 23 million through various funds and donations. After Croatia joins the European Union, the HCR will apply for money from the EU structural funds, he added.
"Until we remove them all (mines), we won't have a normal society, a normal Croatia", Dijana Plestina, head of the government's demining office said.
For each Christmas or postcard purchased at KOZMO stores, citizens donate HRK 8.99 for demining.
