Croatian Helsinki Committee says PM has insulted 3 mln emigrants

Autor: half
ZAGREB, Sept 21 (Hina) - Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic's statements during Question Time in parliament on Tuesday degraded public speech in Croatia, the Croatian Helsinki Committee on Human Rights (HHO) said on Friday, particularly condemning Milanovic's answer to a question from HDZ deputy Davor Stier as an unprecedented "chauvinistic outburst at the expense of Croatian emigrants".

The aggressive and arrogant rhetoric of the incumbent government only covers up an incapability to solve Croatian society's burning issues, notably those related to the social human rights of a large number of Croatian citizens, the HHO said in a statement, adding that Milanovic's rhetoric only further deepened the rifts in Croatian society.

The fact that the state of human rights in Croatia is not good is evidenced in German Chancellor Angela Merkel's letting Milanovic know a few days ago in Berlin that Germany will not ratify Croatia's European Union Accession Treaty before the final monitoring report on Croatia, which is expected to be ready in March, the HHO said.

The HHO said that when Milanovic told Stier that he did not understand and love Croatia because he had not lived in it, he slandered about three million Croatian emigrants.

Milanovic's "uncontrolled and irresponsible ... rude, argumentative and incoherent statements" have only contributed to the further degradation of top officials' public speech, the HHO said, adding that some of Milanovic's responses during Question Time were "insulting attacks unprecedented in the modern history of the Croatian parliament."

The HHO said it was unbelievable that no Croatian medium, other than Croatian Television's live broadcast, had informed the public about the question Stier had put to Milanovic nor aired "Milanovic's integral and vulgar answer."
