The Bosnian Federation entity's Civil Defence Operations Headquarters said that one aircraft sent by the Croatian government yesterday was putting out a fire near the southern Bosnian city of Mostar.
Because of the many active wildfires, the entire Herzegovina is covered in smoke. The fires are difficult to extinguish because of inaccessible terrain.
The situation is most difficult in the Konjic area, where a 4 km long forest fire is "reaching disastrous proportions," the HQ said, adding that this wildfire is spreading uncontrollably towards Mostar, where a 16 km long fire has still not been contained.
Large wildfires are active in eastern Bosnia as well in the Srebrenica and Bratunac area. An EUFOR helicopter was used to help the fire-fighters there.
Bosnian authorities have also requested the help of a Russian helicopter stationed in Nis, Serbia which can carry five tonnes of water. The aircraft could be used on Sunday.
