Bosnia wants Serbian parliament speaker to apologise

Autor: half
SARAJEVO, Aug 22 (Hina) - The deputy speaker of the Bosnian parliament's lower house, Denis Becirevic, has asked Serbian Parliament Speaker Nebojsa Stefanovic to apologise for speaking of Republika Srpska (RS), Bosnia and Herzegovina's Serb entity, as a state.

Becirevic told reporters in Sarajevo on Wednesday he wanted Stefanovic to officially apologise to Bosnia and Herzegovina, saying that if he continued to say that RS was a state, he risked having officials in Bosnia, Hungary, Vojvodina, Sandzak, and other parts of the world saying that Vojvodina and Sandzak were states.

Stefanovic spoke of RS as a state in Belgrade earlier this month when he met with RS Parliament Speaker Igor Radojicic. Speaking of RS-Serbia relations, he said the cooperation between "the two states" should be intensified.

Stefanovic responded to initial criticisms from Bosnia with a statement regretting the allegedly wrong interpretations of his statements and saying that it had not been his intention to bring into question Bosnia as a state.

Becirevic said today that Stefanovic's statements were proof that Serbia's new government was making a step backwards regarding Bosnia and that they pointed to territorial aspirations towards Bosnia, which he said would be resolutely opposed.

Political parties from RS criticised Becirevic over his polemic with Stefanovic, saying they would ask that he be relieved of duty.

Becirevic said today such demands were absurd, as he was only defending Bosnia's state interests.
