Spokeswoman Silvana Oruc-Ivos told a news conference that parliament and the government did not observe the day of remembrance, as promised in April, saying this meant they ignored communist crime victims and that they did not treat all victims in Croatia equally.
She said that as a future member of the European Union, Croatia should see to observing August 23 appropriately.
Speaking on behalf of the HDZ Presidency, the president of the party's Split-Dalmatia County branch, Ante Sanader, regretted that the authorities were not observing this day, saying this "leads to the conclusion that the incumbent authorities are shamed of their past."
A party delegation laid wreaths to the victims of totalitarian regimes at Split's cemetery.
Also today, the Croatian Party of Rights Dr. Ante Starcevic said the ruling coalition did not keep its promise to observe more actively the Europe-wide Day of Remembrance for the victims of all totalitarian and authoritarian regimes.
