ICTY: Defence requests Karadzic's acquittal

Autor: half
THE HAGUE, June 11 (Hina) - Radovan Karadzic's attorneys on Monday asked the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia to acquit the former Bosnian Serb political leader, claiming that no genocide was committed in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Agence France-Presse reported.

Counsel Peter Robinson said Karadzic asked that all 11 counts of the indictment against him be dismissed and that after the prosecution finished presenting evidence on May 25, he asked the trial chamber to acquit him. The chamber will state its position before the defence starts presenting its evidence on October 16.

Karadzic is charged with participation in a joint criminal enterprise aimed at removing Bosnian Muslims from Srebrenica through the killing of men and boys and the forcible relocation of women, children and the elderly from Srebrenica.

The former president of Republika Srpska, Bosnia's Serb entity, leader of the Serb Democratic Party and supreme commander of the Bosnian Serb army is charged with genocide, crimes against humanity and breaches of the laws and customs of war committed in Bosnia from 1992 to 1995, resulting in the deaths of about 100,000 and the displacement of 2.2 million people.

Karadzic was indicted on 25 July 1995. He was transferred to the Hague tribunal on 30 July 2008 and his trial began on 26 October 2009.
