Nature Protection Day marked in Zagreb

Autor: half
ZAGREB, May 20 (Hina) - Nature Protection Day in Croatia and International Day for Biological Diversity were marked in Zagreb's Maksimir Park on Sunday under the organisation of the Environmental and Nature Protection Ministry.

State Institute for Nature Protection acting manager Davorin Markovic said International Day for Biological Diversity 2012 was dedicated to protecting marine biodiversity, recalling that the sea accounted for nearly half of Croatia's territory, so more effort should be invested in the preservation of marine habitats, which are among the most endangered.

"Our sea is among the cleanest in Europe, but because of insufficient care and inappropriate management, there has been a significant decline in fish and other marine organisms used in human consumption, so more attention should be given to this problem and good solutions found," he said.

In 2003, the Croatian parliament declared May 22, the UN's International Day for Biological Diversity, also Nature Protection Day in Croatia.
