Rasema Handanovic found guilty of war crimes against Croats in Trusina, Bosnia

Autor: vmic
MOSTAR, April 30 (Hina) - Bosnia and Herzegovina's State Court on Monday sentenced Rasema Handanovic to five and a half years in prison after she reached a plea agreement with the prosecution and confessed to the murder of 18 Croat civilian detainees and four soldiers she had committed in the Herzegovina village of Trusina in April 1993 together with other members of a special purposes unit attached to the Bosnian Army Supreme Command.

"Handanovic has been given a prison sentence of five years and six months. She will remain in court custody until she is sent to serve her sentence," the court told Hina on Monday.

Handanovic was arrested in the United States in April 2011 and was extradited to Bosnia and Herzegovina later that year.

Handanovic expressed remorse at the executions of Croat POWs and agreed to testify against the other accused. During the trial, she accused the deputy commander of the Zulfikar unit, Nihad Bojadzic, of ordering the execution of captured Croat civilians and soldiers in Trusina, near Konjic, in April 1993.

The accused are Mensur Memic, Dzevad Salcin, Senad Hakalovic, Nedzad Hodzic, Nihad Bojadzic and Zulfikar Alispago, all former members of the Bosnian Army. Prosecutors are still investigating Edin Dzeko, a former member of the Zulfikar unit who is in custody after being recently extradited by the US.
