MAC director Dusan Gavran said that about 1,300 square kilometres of land in Bosnia and Herzegovina, or 2.6 per cent of its territory, was believed to be infested by mines laid during the country's 1992-1995 war.
Since the end of the war, 583 people have been killed by mine explosions and another 1,100 have been injured. Land mines pose a direct threat to about 900,000 Bosnians.
Bosnia and Herzegovina is largely dependent on foreign donations for mine removal projects. One of the biggest donors is the European Union, which has earmarked over 40 million euros to date for that purpose.
