UNPROFOR WOES OVER VAGUE DEFINITIONS OF DISENGAGEMENT LINE

Autor:
PAKRAC, Nov 15 (Hina) - "The biggest trouble for UNPROFOR in Sector West is a vague definition of the disengagement line from the Croatian side, making it extremely difficult to keep the warring sides apart," Col. Ignacio Oscar told an UNPROFOR news conference in Pakrac after attending a regular "coordination" meeting with Croatian representatives. Pakrac police superintendent Nikola Ivkanac, also at the meeting, complained about the miserable security situation in the sector, UN spokeswoman in Sector West, Susan Manuel, told reporters. Ivkanac pointed out that Serbs were involved in no less than 19 (nineteen) armed incidents at the week-end. But Manuel blamed Croatians for the incidents, saying they were moving "too close" to Serb positions. "It is quite legitimate for the Croatian side to go as far as the disengagement line, but UNPROFOR is supposed to separate the warring sides and it's proving quite a problem for us," Manuel explained. Asked whether UNPROFOR had sighted any movements in Sector West in connection with the escalation of conflict in Bosnia, Manuel said no. But she said, quite "off the record" as she put it, that two Serb soldiers had met their death in Bosnia-Herzegovina in the last two weeks. Pakrac residents say that Serbs have been burying their dead on their side of the town, with numerous salvoes, gunfiring and other fanfare, which obviously meant that the dead were killed in action. Manuel said UNPROFOR just didn't have enough men to guarantee the safety of work crews repairing two buildings on the Croatian side of Pakrac (as Croat authorities had asked), because the buildings were less than 100 yards away from the disengagement line. But nonetheless the request was being considered, Manuel said. (hina) mm as sd 151507 MET nov 94
