ZAGREB, Sept 7 (Hina) - The cancellation of the Pope's visit to
Sarajevo is the leading front-page story in today's issue of the
Zagreb daily, VJESNIK. The article also gives full details of the
final preparations for the Pope's visit to Zagreb.
An article headlined "Education Crippled" covers the mass
school teachers' strike, involving kindergartens, primary and
secondary schools.
A comment piece titled "Why Aren't the Wheels of the
Federation Moving?" says, in part: "It is obvious that Sarajevo
prefers Croats who are willing to bow to force, rather than those
brandishing sabres - the Federation cannot survive witout
satisfying both types."
Today's issue carries a story about the western-Bosnian
refugee drama at the Turanj checkpoint. The article says a refugee
delegation is to visit Velika Kladusa today, to assess whether it's
safe enough for them to return to that western-Bosnian town.
Another comment piece, by Vlado Rajic, speculates about the
forthcoming Government reshuffle.
VECERNJI LIST lead front-page story is headlined "Government
and Teacher Unions Refuse to Budge." "The strike seems to be
weakening, at least at kindergarten levels," the story says.
"Red Carreerist and Destitute Teachers," is the title of a
comment piece by Milan Ivkosic, in a scathing attack on Union
leader Vesna Kanizaj.
The paper also announces the beginning of a three-day vigil
ahead of the Pope's visit.
The paper's editor-in-chief, Branko Tudjen, answers his own
question in an article titled "Where Has Izetbegovic Gone Wrong."
VECERNJI LIST also carries an interview with the President of
the Federation of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kresimir Zubak. "The problem
is that we haven't established a government hierarchy, but the
Federation will survive anyway" Zubak said.
