U.N. SPOKESMAN WILLIAMS' INTERVIEW WITH CROATIAN TELEVISION

Autor:
ZAGREB, Aug 14 (Hina) - "The United Nations will never recognize the Krajina (established by Serb rebels)" a spokesman for the U.N. Protection Force (UNPROFOR), Michael Williams, said in the last night's broadcasting of Zagreb television, commenting on a letter of Milan Martic, the president of the self-declared Serb republic of Krajina, to Yuliy Vorontzov, the President of the U.N. Security Council (U.N.S.C.). Commenting on the presidential statement adopted by the U.N.S.C. on the blockade of UNPROFOR free movements in Croatia Williams held that "the situation is getting better". As far as I am informed, the Croatian government and representatives of the Croatian displaced persons have reached an agreement on lifting blockades for UNPROFOR. The U.N.S.C. was concerned over the difficulty, but it should be noted that the presidential statement also expresses sympathy with displaced persons, and underlines the territorial integrity of the Republic of Croatia, Williams said. Eleven entry points are opened at the moment, and UNPROFOR and the Croatian government have elaborated ways for controlling these checkpoints; e.g. we send a list of transported goods in advance to the Croatian government, and the Croatian police can then inspect them, UNPROFOR spokesman said. He expressed hope that another eight crossing would be soon reopened and that other problems would be immediately resolved, such as the return of the expelled people to their homes. Williams recalled that U.N. special envoy Yasushi Akashi had told President Tudjman and Premier Valentic that UNPROFOR had defined "several villages in zones of separation where some of these unfortunate people will be able to come back soon." Evaluating the recent talks of Croatian representative Hrvoje Sarinic with leaders of Serb rebels in Knin to be "fruitful" Williams stressed that solutions to economic and political issues should be sought starting from the basis of the good 29 March ceasefire agreement signed in Zagreb. Asked about a possible lifting of the arms embargo against Moslems Williams said that even if this could happen it would not mean that UNPROFOR is to withdraw from other parts of former Yugoslavia, e.g. from Croatia and Macedonia.
