ZAGREB, Apr 7 (Hina) - Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General
for the former Yugoslavia Yasushi Akashi issued a statement late
Wednesday night in connection with talks held on Wednesday in
Sarajevo and Pale.
"In an effort to build on the progress achieved in recent
weeks towards peace, the Special Envoy of the Secretary General,
Yasushi Akashi, along with the Force Commander, General de
Lapresle, visited Pale and Sarajevo on 6 April, and held high-level
discussions with the President of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Alija
Izetbegovic, and the leader of the Bosnian Serbs, Radovan
Karadzic," said the statement.
"In light of the positive signs that emerged from these
discussions, the Special Envoy has instructed the Force Commander
in Bosnia and Herzegovina, General Roso, to begin immediate talks
at the military level on 7 April in Sarajevo with the Commander of
the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina, General Delic, and the
Commander of the Bosnian Serb Army, General Mladic. The Special
Envoy hopes that these talks will lead to the establishment of a
general ceasefire along the lines of confrontation between the two
sides," said the statement.
"The Special Envoy, Yasushi Akashi, calls on both parties to
seize this opportunity to bring an end to the bloodshed which the
people of Bosnia and Herzegovina have been forced to endure for the
past two years," the statement said.
