VINKOVCI, Apr 4 (Hina) - Two UNPROFOR check-points at the
demarcation lines Vinkovci-Mirkovci and Nustar-Brsadin (toward UNPA
East) were established today according to the cease-fire agreement
signed by representatives of Croatian authorities and Serb rebels
from UNPAs in the Russian embassy in Zagreb on 29 March 1994.
The check-point near Brsadin (some 200 km east of Zagreb, and
near the occupied town of Vukovar) was first open, where a pontoon
bridge across the river of Vuka was set up as well. At the bridge a
meeting was held between Croatian General Djuro Decak, commander of
the Croatian units of the Osijek area, Belgian Brigadier-General
Wim Vandick, Sector East's commander, and Major Vranjesevic, a
representative of the Serb side.
Croatian General Decak told reporters: "We will comply with
all that we signed. In Croatia there are places for all who want to
live in it."
The Serb representative, Major Vranjesevic said: "We have
fought a war for three years, and just like you, we have achieved
nothing. Military ways have turned out not to yield results, and I
think that it is politicians who should make agreements."
Afterwards reporters were allowed to have access to the
UNPROFOR check-point near Brsadin. However, they were not permitted
to attend opening of the other check-point at Mirkovci (10 km south
af the first one). Although reporters could not come nearer to the
check-point, staying some 50 metres from the spot, they could
notice agitation among the villagers of occupied Mirkovci.
Brigadier Plavsic, a representative of the Serb militia from
the occupied areas, confirmed that there was anxiety. He said that
much of that remained unclear to people, and that they were very
disturbed by such a number of reporters and cameras. Therefore he
asked the Croatian side to show understanding adding that there
would be enough time to film what was going on. Besides Croatian
journalists there were a crew of Visnews and a correspondent of the
Belgrade-based newspaper "Politika" from the occupied town of
Vukovar.
According to the cease-fire agreement signed in Zagreb,
establishing of a check-point at Lipovac at the "Zagreb-Lipovac"
highway (the highway toward Belgrade) is also scheduled.
