UNPROFOR DENIES AERIAL ATTACKS ON VITEZ AND NOVI TRAVNIK

ZAGREB, Jan 15 (Hina) - The United Nations forces registered no aerial attacks in the areas of Vitez and Novi Travnik on Thursday, said the UNPROFOR office in Zagreb on Saturday. Yesterday's statement by UNPROFOR spokesman in Bosnia- Herzegovina Bill Aikman that Vitez and Travnik had been attacked by unidentified combat planes and helicopters was based exclusively on the information provided by Bosnian Moslem forces, an UNPROFOR spokesperson told Hina today. Mr Aikman also confirmed this in the subsequent clarification of his statement, saying that UNPROFOR could not confirm the allegation from an independent source. The UNPROFOR office in Zagreb quoted NATO spokesman Jim Mitchell as saying that NATO could not substantiate any reports of the combat aircraft activity in the Vitez area. Mitchell said yesterday that at 5.30 hours Thursday NATO aircraft had registered over the Vitez area something believed to be a helicopter. He specified that fighters sent to investigate the case had established a radar contact with the aircraft but could not establish a visual contact before losing on the radar. 151336 MET jan 94
