ZAGREB, May 17 (Hina) - Stevo Harambasic, former commander of the
51th brigade of Serb paramiliary forces, last night appeared in a
Croatian TV current-affairs show.
During the western Slavonia action, Harambasic's brigade was
surrounded by Croatian forces and he ordered the soldiers to
surrender.
"We were quite aware of the situation and of our moral
obligation to 6,000 people who were surrounded, which is a very
difficult and unfavourable situation from the military point of
view," Harambasic said.
"My associates and I weighed all the pros and cons and decided
that the correct thing to do was to initiate negotiations with the
Croatian side - better than having a huge loss of life, let the
whole thing end in peace and everybody get the opportunity to
decide for himself how and where he will live," he said.
Asked what he would advise Serbs, to stay or to leave,
Harambasic said his view was that "everybody should decide these
things for him- or herself".
"For myself, I know I am here at this moment, and what happens
to me depends on the Croatian legislation," Harambasic said.
Harambasic, released on bail, is awaiting trial before the
Bjelovar Military Tribunal.
