FIGHTING IN SARAJEVO REKINDLES AFTER BRIEF LULL

SARAJEVO, May 16 (Hina) - Sarajevo authorities have forbidden residents to move around in the streets because of intense fighting that rocked the Bosnian capital this morning. Residents were urged to stay in their shelters and take warm clothes and food supplies. According to the Bosnian army 1st corps, after a brief lull around 11 a.m. the Serbs continued attacking all Bosnian defence positions in Sarajevo, particularly around the Jewish cemetery, using chemical warfare. According to UN spokesman Alexander Ivanko, the fighting started early this morning after four mortar shells hit the premises of the Serb-controlled Lukavica barracks. About 9 a.m. fighting was raging at all frontlines in and around Sarajevo. According to UN observers, the combatants used heavy artillery, mortars and machine-guns. The fiercest clashes were registered in the northern neighbourhoods of Sedrenik and Spicasta Stijena, as well as at the Jewish cemetery in southern Sarajevo, where UN observers counted several dozen detonations. Several shells landed in the immediate vicinity of the residence of UNPROFOR's Bosnia commander, Gen. Smith, in downtown Sarajevo, the UN spokesman said. Red alert was in force at all UN facilities in Sarajevo. Meanwhile, the Bosnian army and Serb irregulars accused each other of restarting the conflicts. Ivanko would not say who in fact was responsible. Ivanko called on all sides to return to the negotiating table.
